{"id":611975659846,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:44","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/cordons-good-grafting-many-varieties\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:40:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:40:53","slug":"cordons-good-grafting-many-varieties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/cordons-good-grafting-many-varieties\/","title":{"rendered":"Get As Many Fruit Varieties As Possible From A Small Area"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Cordons are Amazing Foundations for Grafting, One Cordon Can Take 30+ Varieties!<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/steven-edholm-skillcult-fruit-pruning\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9514\">Skill Cult Steve<\/a> shows off his cordon collection and points out some fun stuff about how grafting goes on cordons like peaches on cream, except these are apples, I know, please don\u2019t ruin the moment.<\/p>\n<p>This is a nice cordon appreciation video that shows some results of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/apple-tree-rootstock-grafting-videos\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"10995\">grafting<\/a>, but it\u2019s not a grafting or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/growing-cordon-fruit-trees-wires-pruning\">cordon growing guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Grow Diagonal Cordon Apples for Collecting, Testing and Small Spaces- Planting, Training, Pruning\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M23VxZtCp_o\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Steve is using the fully dwarfing apple rootstock Budagovsky 9, known as B9 or Bud 9. In the UK, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/apple-tree-rootstocks-malling-series\">equivalent is the M9<\/a>, and it\u2019s not uncommon to use an MM106 semi-vigorous rootstock for cordons<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has tried and either stuggled or failed to grow a Franken or Family Fruit Tree knows that it\u2019s a challenge to balance the growth rates of the different varieties. <br>But as Steve shows, that\u2019s barely an inconvenience with grafts on cordons. <br>Having 30 plus varieties on one cordon is so simple because cordons are pruned twice a year anyway, and the summer prune really puts the brakes on woody growth. <br>This forces the varieties in balance in one go, without the vigorous ones needing frequent special attention.<\/p>\n<p>As Steve says, cordons take up very little space, and produce very little fruit compared to trees: they are like a single branch, albeit a hard working one. <br>Therefore, cordons shine for both small gardens, and small households with only one or two casual apple eaters who don\u2019t need a big harvest. <br>When we add the grafting to the equation, you\u2019ve got about 1.5 cordons per metre, with let\u2019s
