{"id":611975856454,"date":"2025-10-16T16:35:44","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:35:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/rhs-dead-hedge-video\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:40:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:40:38","slug":"rhs-dead-hedge-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/rhs-dead-hedge-video\/","title":{"rendered":"RHS Dead Hedge In The City Video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The RHS has produced a dear little video that very sweetly promotes hedges over fences on the basis of their usefullness and environmental value.<\/p><figure><div>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to plant a hedge and why it\u2019s better than a fence | The RHS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3MMMdWs084A\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>On a debatably even sweeter premise, I will offer my dear little criticisms in the traditional manner of my people, the backseat driving folk of Somerset:<\/p>\n<figure class=\" size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/backseat-driver-cheddar-chariot.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/backseat-driver-cheddar-chariot.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/backseat-driver-cheddar-chariot-300x300_9.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/backseat-driver-cheddar-chariot-150x150_9.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/backseat-driver-cheddar-chariot-768x768_9.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><figcaption>This is how we all drive in the West Country<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>RHS Horticultural Advisor Nick Turrell seems like a lovely chap, and his video starts off with a nice framing story about needing to hide some bins at the back of his <s>film set<\/s> garden. <br>All very believable, and it introduces the point well: fences are tacky and make your bum look big, while hedges are glamourous and make the other girls jealous.<\/p>\n<p>But Nick masterfully injects dramatic tension into this tidy picture: luxurious hedges, for all their supreme elegance, take time to grow, while frumpy fences have the trump card of instant separation gratification. When I really don\u2019t want to look at something, I literally don\u2019t want to see it again.<\/p>\n<p>To help sell the hedge, Nick repeats that old chestnut about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/do-hedges-block-noise-sounds\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13509\">hedges reducing road noise<\/a>, and shares some interesting research about the best hedges for capturing air pollution, which include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/yew-hedging-plants-taxus\">Yew<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/western-red-cedar-hedge-plants-thuja-plicata\">Thuja plicata<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/oleaster-hedge-plants-elaeagnus-angustifolia\">Elaeagnus<\/a> (we only stock the decidious species at time of writing), and above all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/cotoneaster-hedging-plants\">evergreen Cotoneasters<\/a> with their hairy leaves. <br>If you thought that was interesting, you will love <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-3298\/7\/10\/81\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Evaluating the Effectiveness of Urban Hedges as Air Pollution Barriers <\/em>by Blanu\u0161a et al<\/a>, which famously found that \u201conly hedge depths in excess of 2m were found to noticeably reduce the concentration of fine particles in species with less capacity for particulates\u2019 capture\u201d, whereas effective species like Cotoneaster achieved useful results in 1.5m wide hedges.<\/p>\n<p>He explains out that hedges are essential for wildlife, which is great if you like spiders, and roots are better than concrete at absorbing water.<\/p>\n<p>By this point, Nick has so sold the advantages of hedges over fences that I\u2019m starting to look out the window and wonder how much a dry stone wall would cost.<\/p>\n<p>But Nick, master storyteller, snatches my attention back from the brink with the big reveal: <\/p>\n<figure class=\" size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"521\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/nick-turrel-rhs-dead-hedge-1024x521.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13805\"><\/figure><p>While your hedge is reaching the desired size, you block the view of whatever eyesore was bothering you with the lesser eyesore of a wall of dead sticks bound as a \u201chedge\u201d, but also technically a fence, ideally on the North or East side of the hedge so as not to block the light. <br>Nick\u2019s resourceful answer to \u201cfence or hedge\u201d is \u201cboth, and cheap\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Dead hedging is a very common practice when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/hedgelaying-uk\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13206\">hedgelaying<\/a> out in country. You don\u2019t see it much in the city, but that only makes it trendier.<\/p>\n<p>Building a deadhedge could even make you more popular with the neighbours who pay their gardeners to remove woody green waste, that\u2019s a little van load of debris there.<\/p>\n<p>But a dead hedge \u201ccould be prettier\u201d, which is polite for \u201cit looks like a pile of dead sticks in front of some garden bins\u201d. <br>A dead hedge will never look as lush as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/blog\/how-say-coppice-noun-verb\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13701\">hazel hurdle made from your own copse<\/a> by old uncle Jack, but ol\u2019Jack don\u2019t hurdle for nowt, those things cost money.<\/p>\n<p>So, there is one proven way to make things prettier: buy more pretty things to put on top of them. <\/p>\n<p>If your dead hedge gets a decent amount of sun, it\u2019s an ideal support for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/sweet-pea-seedling-plugs\">sweet pea seedlings<\/a> to scramble over without delay.<\/p>\n\n<section class=\"prodshow-shopify-block\" \n
