{"id":611975954758,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:43","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/partial-self-fertility-fruit-trees\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:40:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:40:54","slug":"partial-self-fertility-fruit-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/partial-self-fertility-fruit-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Partial Self Fertility in Fruit Trees Like Summer Sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of our customers, M, got in touch with a fruit tree pollination question, asking about the difference between:<\/p><ul>\n<li>Not self-fertile<\/li>\n<li>Partially self-fertile<\/li>\n<li>Self-fertile<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>M had bought a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/summer-sun-cherry-trees\">Summer Sun cherry tree<\/a>, and noted that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhsplants.co.uk\/plants\/_\/cherry-summer-sun\/classid.2000040501\/\" rel=\"noopener\">RHS said she\u2019s partially self-fertile<\/a>, whereas we clearly state that she\u2019s practically kinda almost self-fertile. <\/p><p>Other top garden sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenfocused.co.uk\/fruitarticles\/cherry\/variety-summer-sun.php\" rel=\"noopener\">Garden Focused<\/a> lean toward our nuanced assessment: <\/p><blockquote><p>Summer Sun is sometimes described as partially self-sterile but will produce a good crop even as a standalone tree. It can almost be considered as fully self-fertile.<\/p><\/blockquote><h3>Pollination Testers Put a Bag On It<\/h3><p>We don\u2019t mean to be crude about this, but it comes down to putting a light, airy cloth bag over the flowers so bees and other bugs can\u2019t get them. <br>When the flowers are full, a pollination tester would reach in the bag with a brush to twizzle around inside the flowers, simulating a bee moving the pollen, then tie up the bag again.<\/p><ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Not self-fertile:<\/strong> No fruit will form<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Partially self-fertile:<\/strong> Fruit will form, but the crop will be small. The fruit are often normal, but might be poorer in flavour\/texture\/size, or misshapen<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Self-fertile:<\/strong> Normal size crops of good fruit will form. However, they can usually be improved further by pollination<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>We have not bag-tested Summer Sun ourselves, but the word on the street is that it\u2019s at the high end of partial self-fertility, producing decent, but not big, crops of normal fruit with no partner.<\/p><h4>Stella Cherries Are Everywhere..And So Are Other Pollination Partners!<\/h4><p>Summer Sun is a smashing cherry, and it has the bonus feature of being a highly compatible pollination partner for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/stella-cherry-trees\">Stella<\/a>. <br>Stella is one of the most popular cherries in Britain, so chances are high that one is nearby! <\/p><p>So, in practice, Summer Sun works out to be \u201ceffectively self-fertile\u201d, meaning you can have just the one cherry tree in your garden, and it should get the pollen top up it need from neighbours to crop really well.<\/p>\n\n<section class=\"prodshow-shopify-block\" \n         id=\"prodshow-block-1\"\n
