Rather, mulch well forever after.<\/p><figure><div>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Plant a Bare-Root Fruit Tree | Zero Fertility Method\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zy9K7VguoPA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>But in the name of sober shopping online, does that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/tree-planting-large-support-stake\">full size tree support stake<\/a>, which costs a fiver, look like an appropriate size for that little maiden fruit tree?<\/p>\n<div><figure class=\" size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"657\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-1.png 657w, https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-1-300x283_9.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 657px) 100vw, 657px\"><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>Honestly, it won\u2019t anchor the tree any better than a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/bamboo-canes\">90cm bamboo cane<\/a>, which costs less than 30p: a bigger cane is better, longer-lasting, but not essential.<\/p>\n<p>Having a big stake that tall for a small fruit tree is overkill, unless it\u2019s supporting a really big tree guard, maybe, but no, it\u2019s huge.<\/p>\n<div><figure class=\" size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"742\" height=\"610\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fruit-tree-tying-large-stake-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fruit-tree-tying-large-stake-1.png 742w, https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fruit-tree-tying-large-stake-1-300x247_9.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\"><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>Whether you use a big stake or a bamboo cane, you don\u2019t need to tie a tree stiff as a post like Huw does above. <br>You really <strong>aren\u2019t holding the tree trunk up<\/strong>, you are mainly staking in order to <strong>prevent the roots from being rocked by wind<\/strong> in years 1 &amp; 2. <br>With the roots all set, the trunk can grow well unsupported.<br>By year 3\u2019s early Autumn winds, the roots should be deep enough to stand on their own, and the bamboo underground will have rotten.<\/p>\n<div><figure class=\" size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"606\" height=\"403\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/stake-small-tree-with-bamboo-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/stake-small-tree-with-bamboo-1.png 606w, https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/stake-small-tree-with-bamboo-1-300x200_9.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\"><figcaption>An 80-90cm bamboo pole, sunk 40-50cm into the ground, can be tied a few inches above the graft union point on the tree<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>In the diagram, most of the fruit tree\u2019s trunk is clear above the support stake \/ bamboo. <br>It\u2019s free to wave in the wind without bumping into its support.<br>That is a good thing: flexing of the trunk makes the wood hunkier.<\/p>\n<p>Note that the tie should be several inches above the graft, not on or right above it.<\/p>\n<h3>But I Am Growing In A Very Windy Location<\/h3>\n<p>If you are growing trees in a wind blasted, exposed location, you are already a specialist in the challenges. People go for different wind management strategies, double staking is a popular one.<\/p>\n<h3>OK That\u2019s a Small Maiden Tree, What About A Bigger Half-Standard or Bush Size Tree?<\/h3>\n<p>If you were to plant a tree in a sheltered courtyard with no support, it should be fine: if no one jumps on it. <br>The support stake is there to protect the tree from strong winds and a degree of human or animal bumping, for the first couple of years. <br>The stake not only could, but ideally should come off in the third year, unless there was a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Strong winds hit most, but not all, gardens. <br>Therefore, we recommend that most people plant trees in larger sizes with a stake, most of the time, and yes, we are literally selling them. <\/p>\n\n<section
