{"id":611976053062,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:43","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/why-are-my-cherry-laurel-leaves-turning-yellow\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:40:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:40:59","slug":"why-are-my-cherry-laurel-leaves-turning-yellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/why-are-my-cherry-laurel-leaves-turning-yellow\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Are My Cherry Laurel Leaves Turning Yellow?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is true that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/cherry-laurel-hedge-plants-prunus-laurocerasus-rotundifolia\">Cherry Laurel, Prunus laurocerasus<\/a>, is a trooper and will grow almost anywhere, but that is not the same as looking tip top as a hedge in all situations. <\/p><p>A few yellow leaves here and there are natural, especially in the early years after transplanting when it\u2019s still catching up on root growth. <br>But rashes of them on an established plant indicate your laurel is not happy about something.<\/p><p>Yellow leaves may or may not be associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/laurel-leaf-shot-hole-disease\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12600\">Laurel shot hole<\/a>. <\/p><p>Phill at Yew Cottage in Ireland, of Garden of the Year 2022 fame, puts it well:<\/p><figure><div>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The best hedges to plant and why! Evergreen Vs Deciduous including cost effective options!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fpl8tEkdaag?start=43&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>There are two common reasons why Cherry Laurel, known for its lush green foliage, can suffer from yellowing leaves.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poor drainage and compacted soil<\/li>\n<li>Iron deficiency due to chalky \/ alkaline soil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Poor Drainage and Compacted Soil<\/h3>\n<p>These two frequently overlap, but not always: compacted soil can be dry, and uncompacted soil can be waterlogged. It\u2019s all bad for roots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waterlogging<\/strong>: Poor drainage leads to stagnant water in the soil with no oxygen, creating the ideal conditions for root rot organisms (especially fungus-like Phytopthera) to attack your plants.<\/p>\n<p>This is fatal for most plants if it isn\u2019t corrected, but Cherry Laurel is so tough that it tends to soldier on with lots of yellow leaves and reduced vigour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compacted Soil<\/strong>: Heavily compacted soil is airless, lifeless, and has the nasty combo of draining very poorly when wet, but then resisting water coming in when it dries out!<br>Both states are terrible for roots.<\/p>\n<h3>Iron Deficiency Due to Chalky Soil<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Alkaline Soil Conditions<\/strong>:<strong> It\u2019s all about the Iron Uptake<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cherry laurels prefer slightly acidic to neutral soils. <br>They usually also grow well in alkaline, chalky soil, if it is reasonably rich in organic matter and well mulched. <br>But there\u2019s a risk of iron deficiency in poorly fertile alkaline soil. <\/p>\n<p>So, the problem is not alkaline soil itself, the <strong>problem is the iron deficiency<\/strong> it tends to cause. <\/p>\n<h2>Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n<p>How you respond to yellow leaves on your laurels depends on where they are growing. If they have only been growing in place for a few years, consider <strong>digging young plants up<\/strong> to improve the soil and\/or replace them. <\/p>\n<p>Digging up a mature hedge is less practical: saving it is better. <br>Good news: whether your soil is alkaline or not, or whether it\u2019s compacted in that area, it is always a good idea to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Mulch <\/strong>the area around plants well. This both feeds the soil, and helps release compaction over time<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Prune <\/strong>the plants lightly, but stronger than a normal trim, to see how the leaves regrow while reducing pressure on the roots<\/li>\n<li>Where drainage is an issue, install suitable <strong>drainage<\/strong> trenches <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you know your soil is chalky \/ alkaline, then go ahead and drench with a <strong>chelated iron<\/strong> foliar feed according to the instructions.<\/p>\n<p>And if they still don\u2019t recover, replace them!<\/p>\n\n<section class=\"prodshow-shopify-block\"
