{"id":613786485062,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:49","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/how-make-bulb-lasagne\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:40:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:40:57","slug":"how-make-bulb-lasagne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/bulbs\/how-make-bulb-lasagne\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Make a Bulb Lasagne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bulb lasagne is a pot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/flower-bulbs\">flower bulbs<\/a> planted in layers for successive flowering all Spring. <\/p><p>A 30cm (12\u201d) deep pot is best, but just remove layers if it is shallower:<br><\/p><ul>\n<li>5 \u2013 10cm (2-4\u201d) of compost potting soil leaving 20 \u2013 25cm (8-10\u201d) of pot empty<\/li>\n<li>A layer of late spring flowerers such as late daffodils or tulips<\/li>\n<li>Add 5 \u2013 7cm (2-3\u201d) compost<\/li>\n<li>Maybe a layer of hyacinths or earlier tulips. Aim for March-April flowers<\/li>\n<li>Add another 5 \u2013 7cm (2-3\u201d) compost<\/li>\n<li>A layer of early flowering bulbs such as snowdrops and\/or crocus.<\/li>\n<li>Cover with 5 \u2013 7cm (2-3\u201d) compost<\/li>\n<li>Water well and enjoy<\/li>\n<\/ul><figure><div>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Plant a Bulb Lasagne\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cY3r_65lVo8\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n<p>Right, today we\u2019re going to plant a bulb lasagne. So, got a tall, deep pot, and we\u2019re going to plant the bulbs in layers. They\u2019ll come up, and they\u2019ll flower in succession. We\u2019ve got our pot, we\u2019ve got our bulbs. We\u2019ve got seven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/daffodil-narcissus-bulbs\">daffodils<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/cheerfulness-daffodil-narcissus-bulbs\">Cheerfulness<\/a>. We\u2019ve got two types of tall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/tulip-bulbs\">Tulip<\/a>, we\u2019ve got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/paul-scherer-tulip-bulbs\">Paul Scherer<\/a> and Diana. Smaller Tulips, which flower earlier. So that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/hearts-delight-tulip-bulbs\">Heart\u2019s Delight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And then on top of that, the next ones, we\u2019re going to plant are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/crocus-bulbs\">Crocuses<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/snowdrop-bulbs\">Snowdrops<\/a>. Snowdrops will obviously flower first, and Crocuses a couple of days later. So if you never sure which way up is, plant it on its side, but daffodils and Tulips easy. That\u2019s the top. That\u2019s where the leaves and the flowers will come out.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the bottom where the roots will come out. So, you plant them straight to the compost like that, just push it in. Tulips are the same, teardrop shaped bulb. That\u2019s where the roots will come out, the basal plate there. And that\u2019s where the shoot will come out. And then snowdrops, and smaller bulbs, if you\u2019re never sure, just plant it on its side. So, we\u2019ve got our bulbs, pot, and we\u2019ve got compost, good quality compost, and then we\u2019ll start filling it up. So get your pot, fill it up about halfway, two lots of tall (Tulips), these are 40 to 50cm high, and then just mix these up a bit, so you don\u2019t get all white on one side and all maroon on the other. A bit more compost on the top. Just press them down. If they\u2019re on top of each other, it won\u2019t matter that much because they\u2019ll just grow around the bulbs. Another layer of compost, firm it down a bit, plant them the right way up.<\/p>\n<p>And then another layer of compost, press it down again. They look fairly natural. Few Snowdrops in there mixed in as well.<\/p>\n<p>And then just top it off, bit more compost.<\/p>\n<p>Just leave a little lip when you fill it up, it\u2019ll hold the water. Don\u2019t forget to water it after you planted it, give it a good soak. Fill this up, fill it up again, and let it soak in again.
