Simple as that.<\/p>\n<p>Several years ago, we sold \u201cIsaac Newton\u2019s apple tree\u201d, which is already a part-fib.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no variety named after Isaac Newton (1643-1727), it\u2019s just a regular old <a href=\"https:\/\/pomiferous.com\/applebyname\/flower-of-kent-id-2738\" rel=\"noopener\">Flower of Kent apple<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>Because Flower of Kent is not a very good apple, some enterprising suppliers who shall remain nameless sold similar looking, but much superior varieties like Arthur Turner as the Isaac Newton tree<\/li>\n<li>There is no way to be certain that the original tree is in fact the tree of Newton fame: there are several contenders, and they can\u2019t all be The One<\/li>\n<li>Officially, the tree at Woolsthorpe Manor is the most direct descendant of the original, but The King\u2019s School, Grantham claims that they have it<\/li>\n<li>Either way, it doesn\u2019t really matter: the original tree blew down in 1820, and all the proposed \u201coriginals\u201d are regrowth from its roots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isaac-newton-apple-tree-woolsthorpe.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14007\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isaac-newton-apple-tree-woolsthorpe.webp 612w, https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isaac-newton-apple-tree-woolsthorpe-300x300_9.webp 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isaac-newton-apple-tree-woolsthorpe-150x150_9.webp 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Flower of Kent is a good example of why many old heritage varieties are no longer grown. They were the best available in their day, but now they are outclassed in every way by newer varieties.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being a vigorous tree, Flower of Kent is a poor cropper, a tip bearer, and not self fertile.<\/p>\n<p>All of that would be forgivable if it had great fruit, but it doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to the nation\u2019s most popular cooking apple, the world-famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/bramley-apple-trees\">Bramley<\/a>, Flower of Kent is, completely unlike you and me, Dear Reader, worthless beyond its historical interest.<\/p>\n<p>If you still want to <strong>buy an Isaac Newton apple tree<\/strong>, our friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitataid.co.uk\/products\/apple-tree-isaac-newton-tree\" rel=\"noopener\">Habitat Aid sell them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Habitat Aid appeared in a whole episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/habitat-aid-hedge-planting-video\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11408\">Ashridge Backseat Planting<\/a>, so they are a household name at this point.<\/p>\n<p>We haven\u2019t checked to see if they have the real Flower of Kent apple or an imposter: if you buy one, and it makes good crops of delicious fruit, you\u2019ll know you were tricked!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<section class=\"prodshow-shopify-block\" \n
