to Say Coppice and Coppicing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s not our job to police people\u2019s pronunciation.<\/p>\n<p>But when someone in the office said the noun \u201ca coppice\u201d the same way as the verb \u201cto coppice\u201d, Sharon was all \u201coh my Gosh, I can\u2019t believe you just done that at work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A coppice, or copse, is a group of trees grown for the purpose of coppicing: harvesting their wood on a cycle of several years by cutting them down to a low stump, which regenerates.<\/p>\n<h4>The act of coppicing is pronounced how it sounds, but the coppiced woodland area itself is pronounced \u201ccopse\u201d, even when spelt \u201ccoppice\u201d.<\/h4>\n<p>Here is the UK Forestry Commission pronouncing it like a city productive fixture on most rural properties: overwhelmingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/common-hazel-hedge-plants-corylus-avellana\">Hazel<\/a>, usually with some Ash for bigger wood, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/sycamore-sapling-plants-acer-pseudoplatanus\">Sycamore<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/small-leaved-lime-sapling-plants-tilia-cordata\">Lime<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/field-maple-hedge-plants-acer-campestre\">Field Maple<\/a>, which are all better choices now that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/blog\/ash-tree-dieback-disease-pictures-and-spore-release-video\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1034\">Ash gets dieback<\/a>.<br>They are all vigorous and respond generously to being coppiced, forming a nice stool.<\/p>\n<p>During the 20th century, coppices were in decline: either replaced by field, or left to grow unmanaged.<\/p>\n<p>People simply do not need much of that type of wood any more, although hazel hurdles still look smashing and what a way to keep the kids busy:<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Making Hazel a comeback is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/trees\/short-rotation-crop-biomass-poplar-willow\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13046\"><\/a>Short Rotation Coppice, intended for biomass energy production. <br>They are invariably planted with <strong>hybrid willows and poplars<\/strong>, which grow monstrously fast.<\/p>\n<p>They are easy to propagate in the field from cuttings, and can be acquired in abundance at harvest time from other SRC\u2019ers, or bought as unrooted \u2018setts\u2019. <br>We don\u2019t sell those super-vigorous hybrids, only the \u201cregular vigorous\u201d natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/willow-hedging-plants-salix\">willow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/black-poplar-sapling-plants-populus-nigra\">poplar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Is Coppicing Right for Me in 2025?<\/h2>\n<p>Without knowing you at all, I feel like yes, coppicing will be great for you in 2025: that is not medical advice, always use protection.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe ease yourself into some gentle coppicing at first to get the coppice juices flowing
