Growing Lavatera 'Burgundy Wine'

Lavatera grow prolifically in any well-drained soil with plenty of sun and shelter: South-facing walls and corners are ideal for them. So if you want a shrub that is rewarding in its growth and easy to maintain, then this is it. It needs to be kept in check a bit with some yearly hard pruning.

There are two main ways to prune.

• The easiest method is to cut the whole bush back by about 50% as soon as it finishes flowering, and then cut it down again in Spring after the last frost to 30-50cm above the ground.
• In more exposed locations, it is better to follow the same procedure as above, and in addition trim off the tips of the stems regularly throughout the summer. Every time it grows by about 30-40cm, pinch or trim off the top buds of each stem (or more, if it is outgrowing its space). You'll end up with more flowers, a tidier shape, and tougher stems that can handle some wind.
