Description

Chicago Peace Hybrid Tea Rose

Chicago Peace is a Hybrid Tea Rose carrying stunning, very large, bright yellow flower heads with a pink/orange overlay, darker around the edges, which can be up to 6 inches across. The lovely pink tinges start on the outside of the rose and can eventually cover the entire head providing a delicate suffusion of colour. The reverse of each petal is a deep yolk yellow and the strong upright growth, with excellent dark, glossy green foliage, can reach up to 1.8m in height. It is slightly susceptible to blackspot but this can be alleviated if the bush is grown in full sun so that the morning dew does not sit too long on the leaves and stems. This does not, however, detract in any way from the desirability of this rose. A sport (natural mutation) of the famous Peace Rose it has a very delicate scent and thorny stems and is grown widely for its spectacular blooms. The flowering season is May until September.

Great in Your Garden

As with all Hybrid Tea Roses, it is perfect for cutting but is also extremely useful to provide a distinctive flash of bright colour to a rose bed or in amongst perennial planting in a mixed border when its strong, upright growth can support less robust plants. It is spectacular when planted amongst low growing purple-leaved plants such as Berberis atropurpurea Nana or Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Tom Thumb' where the pink flushed yellow flowers will be complemented, accented and shown to their best advantage, or plant it with its parent, the Peace rose, to provide subtle colour contrast in a formal rose bed.

Trivia

A naturally occurring, richer (slightly louder?) colour variation of the famous Peace rose. It was discovered in Chicago by Stanley Johnston and registered in 1962. Peace was officially brought to the market in the United States on 29 April 1945 - the day that Berlin fell to the Allies - and has since become the world's most cultivated rose.
