Schizophragma hydrangeoides Roseum: Pink Japanese Hydrangea Vine

Schizophragma hydrangeoides Roseum is a vigorous and beautiful deciduous climber suitable for any position, even deep shade. It requires space to spread out and a moist, fertile, well-draining soil, alkaline or acid, with a good root run.

The flowers are spectacular having large flattened heads of tiny flowers, each floret being tipped with rosy pink bracts (modified leaves) up to 2" long that flutter in the wind. No support is required as aerial roots are produced that anchor the plant and the strong, reddish brown stems create a good architectural structure in winter. It is pest and disease resistant and, after a slow start, it will quickly reach 8m x 4m.

Great for your garden:

Schizophragma hydrangeoides Roseumis the perfect climber for a north wall or shady corner, although it is equally happy in full sun. It can be grown over an arbour, into trees or covering a large wall and it will quickly cover a large area.

The fabulous flattened flower heads with fluttering rosy-pink bracts at the end of each floret, are spectacular in summer and it should be positioned where it can have an impact. The foliage, which is heart shaped and a lovely fresh green, is dense and so it should be grown alone.

Trivia:

It was introduced into the UK in 1901 by E H 'Chinese' Wilson who was a plant hunter employed by James Veitch & Son of Exeter. The Victorians had an insatiable appetite for new plants, and Veitch exploited this market employing over 20 plant hunters travelling all over the world. Wilson spent the majority of his time in Asia and is personally responsible for the introduction of over 25 rose species as well as innumerable other plants of great garden interest.

How to plant Schizophragma hydrangeoides Roseum:

Schizophragma hydrangeoides Roseum should be planted in a hole just larger than the rootball and backfilled with a humus rich compost to which has been added a handful of bonemeal. Firm and water in well.

It will need a little support initially but, once it is against a wall or tree, it will self support by means of aerial roots. Prune to shape in spring before the leaves appear. Feed with a general purpose fertiliser and mulch around the roots when pruning.
