Large narcissi look best when billowing through grass in a slightly haphazard way, no straight lines please. Each 'bowl' contains petticoat layers of gorgeous coloured petals such that the overall effect is to resemble a particularly generous peony flower. In full sun these flowers can open up and are saucer sized - up to 12 cm across - and so are consequently seriously impressive. The collection includes Blue Diamond, a rare gem of a tulip with blue/purple flowers with silvery edges; Monte Carlo, a zingy sulphur yellow playboy of a tulip; Peach Blossom with its archetypal feminine frippery flower and last but not least, that number one hit - the reddest Abba. If you prefer, you can buy some or all of these individually from our range of premium sized tulip bulbs.

An April Treat

The impact of all of these bulbs together is a technicolour feast. However, if you prefer themed planting, since they're packed separately you can play around with various different combinations or grow each variety separately. Even with sturdy stems, the flowers are relatively large so avoid planting them in a windy situation. Otherwise they make a giant statement in pots, underplanted with Muscari. The fragrant Abba and Blue Diamond lend themselves to being grown somewhere where you can enjoy their freesia style smell - window boxes by an open window are good. As large and ornate specimens they can hold their own in a border and will liven up perennial plants that are yet to strut their stuff. All of them would be good companions to silver-leafed plants. And never forget the enormous beauty of these tulips in flower arrangements so buy some extra to put in a corner for cutting. Hot to trot is more the phrase that comes to mind! All double tulips are fairly spectacular because they have such an abundance of petals that they begin to look as sophisticated as a peony. Foxtrot stands out because it rejoices in a plethora of pinks, from deep rose to palest blush pink and none of them sickly or cloying. One feathery pink seeps into the next and the result is unbearably beautiful. As Foxtrot ages the pink colours intensify and deepen; this is one of our prettiest early double tulips and a brilliant addition to our range of tulip bulbs.

And while beauty is undoubtedly important, April is a tough month to be strutting one's stuff and here too it holds its own. Ensure that they have plenty of sun and they'll add vim and vigour to early borders as they progress towards summer. Leaven the pinkness by including some single early white tulips. It has that archetypal, oval shape and richness of colour so often found in Triumph Tulips. Purple Flag petals have a feather-like sheen and are a clear regal purple with a creamy white base to them. You might ask whether we need yet another purple tulip but having viewed this one, indeed we do. It's different because the purple is a deeper, more lavender colour than Purple Prince and it doesn't have the beetrooty overtones of Negrita, both of which are similarly special purple tulips. Purple Flag grows reasonably tall - up to 45 cm - but does so on a strong stem, well able to support the weight of the flower.
