Description

Agapanthus 'Ever Sapphire': African Lily / Lily of the Nile Plants

Not to condemn the lovely 'Charlotte', another compact variety - we all have our different reasons for planting - but Ever Sapphire is bushier and better at filling borders, and the round flower umbels are deeper blue, very much like bluebells. The strappy evergreen leaves are mid-green and glossy. It is clump forming to about 60cm high by 60cm wide.

Agapanthus are only delivered pot-grown, year round.

Growing 'Ever Sapphire' Agapanthus

'Ever Sapphire' flowers earlier than most. Agapanthus need full sun to perform properly and are not suitable for planting outside in colder areas: here they should be grown in a pot and brought under shelter in winter. Otherwise, if an extensive period of frosts or snow is forecast, it is best to cover them

Suitable for any well-drained soil, they like sharply drained, sandy soil in particular, but they will not flower well if they dry out during the growing season.

You can cut out the flowering stems when they fade, but many people prefer to leave some of them for a while to provide autumn interest, and remove them after winter cold blackens them.

In Your Garden Design

'Ever Sapphire' is a deep blue that brings to mind a forest floor of bluebells. Use at the front of borders or in a pot. Pair with its sibling Ever White or create a lovely romantic theme by mixing with lupins such as Blossom, a classic rose such as English Miss, delphiniums, foxgloves, Nigella, dianthus, cosmos and Orlaya grandiflora for a gorgeous English cottage garden effect.
