Description

Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation' Dutch Garlic Bulbs

Purple Sensation is one of the deepest coloured alliums available, with vivid purple blooms in late spring to early summer.

The Purple Sensation ornamental onion (aka Dutch Garlic) is a popular choice, with its show-stopping display of deep violet flowers.

Standing on tall leafless stems up to 1m, the blooms appear to float above other plants, adding tall bursts of interest.

These flowerheads are umbels (short flower stalks emanating from one point) forming 3-inch-wide globes of up to 50 small, rich purple star/bell-shaped flowers.
They do have a faint onion scent: this is only apparent when you smell one up close, it doesn't spread

Once flowered, it is excellent in the vase or for dried bouquets at Christmas.

  • Likes fertile well-drained soil. Add grit to heavier soils such as clay to increase drainage
  • Remove immature seeds as the plants they produce tend to produce paler blooms

In your Garden Design

It's ideal for adding drama to sunny borders or even pots, but equally at home in cottage gardens and flower beds.

Did You Know?

It is a relatively new breed from 1963, produced by Allium maestro, Jan Bijl in Holland.
Mr Bijl was under the impression that his creation was a hybrid of Allium hollandicum & A. aflatunense, but genetic analysis in the 1990s showed only the former parentage.
