How to Grow Gallery Art Fair

Dahlias thrive in deep, fertile soil with good drainage. Water well in dry periods and add a bit of soluble food in the watering can once every couple of weeks to keep your dahlias flowering abundantly throughout summer and autumn.

This compact variety is ideal in containers and creates an eye-catching display at the front of a sunny border. If grown in containers, plants need to be particularly well watered and fed.

Planting Companions

For a contrasting scheme, pair Art Fair with funky orange Art Deco or the tangerine-hot flowers of Dahlia Summer Flame. If you prefer an altogether cooler look, the pale blooms with their chartreuse centres can be combined with the fresh whites and greens of Heuchera 'Lime Marmalade', Nicotiana alata 'Lime Green' and Cosmos 'Sonata White'.

Did You Know?

Raised in 1998 by the Dutch company Fa Gebr Verwer in Lisse, whose Gallery Series are double-flowered varieties developed over a 15-year-period from crossings of border dahlias with low-growing dahlias. They have been raising exciting new varieties since the 1980s, and today 90% of their production is based on cultivars that they bred themselves.

Dahlias can be planted as tubers, rooted cuttings and pot-grown plants.

Tubers can be planted at any time from March onwards. The hole should be at least double the diameter of the tuber laid out on the ground. Incorporate about 25% well rotted compost and if drainage is in any way doubtful then add plenty of horticultural grit as well. Plant one tuber per hole, leaving 60-80cms between plants (depending on final size) and make sure the tuber is covered with 10-12cms (4-5") of soil. This will insulate the tuber against frosts in March-May as they will take a couple of months to show.

Rooted cuttings, available from early April onwards, need to be potted up and kept in a sunny and frost free place until they are ready to be planted out in mid May. Their treatment then is the same as for tubers except they are planted level with rather than 10cms below the surrounding soil level.

Pot grown plants are not delivered until June, and are then planted out immediately in the same way as an established rooted cutting.

The more you deadhead, the more flowers you'll get.
