Description

Silver Spring Alliums

A white allium with purple (sometimes green) centres to the individual florets. We sell one white allium already - the oddly named Allium nigrum, but it is - barring the green seeds - pure white. Well Silver Spring is slightly different. Where it is white, it is possibly a better white than A. nigrum. But unlike its cousin, it is not pure anything. The centres of the florets are touched with deep red/purple and green and the seeds are black and prominent. It actually is a very striking flower indeed and a worthy member of our range of allium bulbs for sale

The flowers are carried, from the end of May into July, on sturdy stems of between 60-70 cm tall. As with all alliums, the downside is that leaves that were handsome in April are pretty manky by the end of May. So it pays to think about the planting a bit. May can be a slow time a herbaceous border, so underplanting these alliums with low growing perennials such as geraniums, sedums - even lambs ear - will hide the withering foliage and let your eye rest easy on one of the most beautiful flowers in your border.

Holds the RHS "Plants for Pollinators" badge, meaning that it is great for bees, butterflies, and other insects that depend on flowers with a good supply of nectar.

Planting Instructions

Plant alliums such as Silver Spring in borders and containers. They can also be naturalised, but they tend to do best where the soil is rich and can be improved with a spring mulch.

The principal requirement is decent drainage - alliums hate permanently wet soil and they grow best in a sunny spot.

Space them quite widely when planting - allium bulbs can be big and a clump will occupy a fair bit of space. The planting hole should be about four times deeper than the bulb is tall. The pointy end is the top...

The spent flower heads are very handsome and can be left on the plant or cut to make a dried flower arrangement. Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing.

By all means apply a high potash fertiliser during the growing season to help bulk up the bulb for next year. Lift and divide clumps of alliums if flowering is poor.
