There’s often narrow shady strip down the side of a house or outbuilding that is made for Hostas. Of Chinese and Japanese origin, when it comes to shade, Hostas are ideal – their funnel-like leaves adding structure and colour whether grown in beds or pots and other containers. And don't forget they flower beautifully and do equally well in a sunny spot as long as the soil is good and moisture retentive. In fact, yellow-leaved varieties do better with some sun, while blue leaved hostas can look a bit dull in the dark. So the best varieties for shady plantings tend to be those with rich green foliage - with yellow highlights if you want variegated plants. All in all, hostas are some of the most useful plants at the gardener's disposal making them an essential part of our herbaceous plant collection.
