Growing 'Irish Green' Sedge

Sedges are tough and shade-tolerant, great low filler plants. Their favourite soil is both moist and well-drained: banks close to water are good.
They are not ideal for dry rockeries like many grass varieties, but with help can establish in quite dry, rocky places where they have shade, shelter, and access to some depth of soil that won't dry out easily: North facing rockeries would be their first choice.

Carex are "almost evergreen": the foliage turns brown right at the end of winter, and (like any grass), they benefit from being sheared down to low mounds to make way for new growth.

In Your Garden Design

A useful plant for providing year round interest. It's ideal in stature for a town garden. The glossy green strappy leaves are a great foil to cottage garden plants such as lupins and scabious. Try planting with one of our herbaceous border collections: particularly shady characters. Heuchera would work well too and hellebores. Foxgloves dotted through would look magnificent.

Did You Know?

Carex morrowii is a Japanese plant, so Irish Green is an exotic name for it.
