Description

Hebe 'Magic Summer' Plants. 2 Litre Pots

Magic Summer is similar to Burning Heart, with evergreen variegated foliage that emerges with a glorious deep pink tint that slowly fades over the summer. It flowers earlier, in June, so planting the two varieties together is worthwhile. It is bushy with a slightly flattened habit, growing to about 60cm high by 80cm wide.

Hebes are only delivered pot-grown, year round.

Growing Magic Summer Hebes

Suitable for any well-drained soil, they tolerate partial shade well. They are hardy across most of the UK, but in cold areas of the North and Scotland, they are best grown in pots that can be moved into shelter from dry winter winds. In other areas outside the South West, covering them during an extended period of frost or snow is recommended to prevent cosmetic damage, but not essential.

Hebes prefer poor soil, so do not add any of our rich composts to the soil before planting: sand would be better in most normal topsoils. In heavy clay soil, churn the ground over to add a bit of gravel & grit (not sand) to give their roots breathing space, likewise add grit to a planting mix for Hebes in pots.

They don't like being hard pruned, so give them a light trim in spring to keep them tight and bushy. If you need to tidy a stray stem, prune it back as little as possible, to a good-looking bud.

In Your Garden Design

The jazzy variegated foliage makes this an ideal pot plant to spruce up a collection of containers similar to Great Dixter's celebrated display of pots outside the famous garden's front door where individual plants in individual pots are placed together to make a fabulous border-like creation. This idea would work outside your front door, or on your terrace or patio. Hebes make great companion plants, so pick your colour scheme and the world is your oyster. My advice is to keep the containers all the same colour and let your plants do the talking!

Magic Summer's colour is at its strongest in June so pick other plants that are good then too.
