Pascali Hybrid Tea Rose

Pascali is one of the truly great white hybrid tea rose. There can be a touch of variability in the colour of its flowers; some are pure white while others can have cream centres.There is no variation in their beauty however. They are all that you look for in a hybrid tea. A curling arrangement of petals, opening from a perfectly shaped bud into a picture postcard, high centred rose of considerable size, often 4 ins (10cms) or more in diameter. The blooms are presented on tall, straight stems (ideal for cutting) and are lightly scented with the tea like perfume from which Hybrid Tea roses get their name. It is a healthy plant with good foliage setting the flowers off to perfection.

White roses sometimes suffer in the rain but Pascali is one of the exceptions, looking stunning covered in raindrops and not going brown round the edges. These features combined made Pascali the world's favourite rose in the late 1980's when it was to be found in every garden. So much so that it was selected to enter the hall of fame by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 1991.

Great for your garden

Pascali roses in full bloom are a sight for sore eyes - real showstoppers that make the most amazing display when planted in a group of three about 80cms apart. This is a good sized rose, easily topping 3ft (90cms) so you can place it in mid-border where it will still be prominent. If you do not have room for it there, then put a couple in your cutting bed - the roses are showy and long-lasting as cut flowers. It will prefer a good spot with well-drained, rich soil and plenty of light. Underplant with spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils and narcissi to bring colour early in the year and also think about alliums - the taller purple ones flower after the daffs but before the roses. The bulbs will love the top dressing and mulching you lavish on your roses...

Trivia

Pascali was the last (and very best) rose bred in 1963 by Victor Lens who died in 1969 and by the 1980's it was the world's best selling rose, also going under the name of Blanche Pasca.

How to plant Pascali Roses

You can order bareroot roses at any time and plant them from November to April, or container roses are available all year round.

Choose a spot in the border with good light. Dig a hole deep enough so that the rose will be planted with the graft union at soil level and with plenty of room for its roots. Improve the soil from the hole by removing roots, weeds, large stones and other detritus and mixing in a good measure of well rotted compost or manure. Add Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi in the bottom of the hole so it will make contact with the roots. If planting pot grown roses gently loosen some roots out of the ball before planting.

Position your Pascali rose so its roots are spread out and backfill the hole with soil, firming it gently as you go. Keep the union at the level of the surrounding soil. Water in thoroughly.
