Growing Rose Bicolor Mirage Sage

Salvias need close to full sun, and will grow near the coast in exposed locations. They are fully hardy, although their flowering season will be shortened somewhat in cold and windy places. They are happy on chalk, and like a light, well-drained but moist soil enriched with humus that doesn't remain wet in winter, so heavy clay is not good. They are perfect for a Mediterranean or gravel garden, and are great in large containers. Established plants are drought resistant, but still want fairly consistent moisture in dry summer periods to flower really well.

Deadhead promptly to get the most from the flowering season, and prune out all the two-year-old growth (over about 1cm wide) in spring, ideally after the last frost, leaving the smaller shoots.

Mulch lightly every year or two, ideally after a heavy spring rain when the soil has warmed up. Salvias don't need much fertility, so a little help goes a long way.

With an RHS hardiness of H4, Salvia greggii is an evergreen perennial in the South and herbaceous in the North. It's not recommended for the very coldest Scottish locations - it's used to a drier cold back.

In Your Garden Design

The bubble gum pink flowers beloved by bees, would look great paired with Nepeta Six Hills Giant. These are ideal for pots but are excellent for filling in borders too. For a particularly jazzy combination, why not place with other members of the Mirage Collection, the cherry red 'Balmircher' and the deep purple 'Balmirdepur'. You could also throw in a two-tone salvia such as Hot Lips into the mix. Alternatively pair with cosmos xanthos and marigolds. We love salvias with roses: depending on your colour scheme any would do, but you could try the Hybrid Tea Whiter Shade of Pale.

Salvia greggii is Autumn Sage, native to mountainous regions of Texas and Mexico. The Mirage Collection consists of a new range of relatively tender hybrid salvias in particularly vivid colours that are known for lasting throughout the summer.
