Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Silver Queen', 2-litre Potted Plants

This evergreen bushy shrub has silver-grey green leaves with a narrow margin of creamy white on purple-black stems. In winter, the leaves are tinged - sunset-like - pink. Come spring, it blooms small clusters of fragrant dark purple flowers. It provides wonderful variegated foliage all year round and is excellent in flower arrangements. To about 3-4 metres.

Growing Pittosporum 'Silver Queen'

Likes a moist, fertile soil with a decent amount of sun. It is hardy throughout most of the UK, but in colder areas it will struggle in exposed locations.

Clip it once a year in Spring to keep it nice and bushy. When it reaches its full size, clip it every other year to encourage flowering.

In Your Garden Design

'Silver Queen' makes its regal presence known as it is a large plant but doesn't need to shout its presence. The soft grey of its leaves, edged with cream, make an excellent backdrop for louder plants, such as brightly coloured annuals and dahlias. It looks good near trees and shrubs with dramatic autumn foliage, such as acers and euonymus.

Did You Know?

Silver Queen is a popular name, we also grow a 'Silver Queen' thyme. This takes its name from a 1942 Western, in which Priscilla Lane plays a woman who takes up gambling to save her family after the 1929 Stock Market crash and finds that she has rather a talent for it. Love, as always in these films, tears her between the good guy and the bad 'un.
