Growing 'Snowcap' Fuchsias

These lovely bushes are appropriately hardy and also reasonably shade-tolerant. Nevertheless, they prefer sunny, sheltered sites. They suit any fertile, well-drained soil.

If it is a harsh winter, their stems will die down to just above ground like a herbaceous perennial, and you can chop off the old growth before spring to make way for new shoots.

Fuchsias are ideal for growing in pots in most of the country. In colder areas, it can be a problem if the pot freezes for too long, potentially killing the crown; plants in the ground should be well enough insulated to avoid this.

In Your Garden Design

The pristine white of the frilly petticoats will make the flowers stand out against the bush's foliage; growing to about one metre tall, you could plant it as a low, informal hedge, beside a patio or at the front of the border to let it show off its charms. You could even train it as a fetching standard to go on either side of a doorway. It's lovely combined with Nandina domestica for its foliage and its flowers, and it also works well with cosmos velouette mixed with a simple sonata white. Ancient fuchsias such as these, look fabulous in old-fashioned cottage gardens.
