Fragaria x ananassa 'Royal Sovereign'

Royal Sovereign strawberries - Mid Season Variety.

A prime example of a delicious old variety that little used by farmers because it doesn't produce big crops. These plants are about quality over quantity and remain a favourite of allotment and garden growers. Be warned! These strawberries are so tasty that after you try them, so-called "strawberry flavoured" products might never taste good again.

Because these plants are on the small side, they are ideal for growing in pots.

Royal Sovereigns were bred by Thomas Laxton at the end of the 19th century. He is a bit of a hero in our book; we have him to thank for breeding European strawberries with American varieties into the plump, hardy fruit we enjoy today. He also played a part in the world's greatest biological discovery by assisting Charles Darwin in his work on evolution.

Harvesting: With a cloche to cover them in spring or a greenhouse, you will get a crop from June. Plants in the open should bear fruit from mid-July.
These strawberries are fully self-fertile.
