Verbascum phoeniceum Violetta

If you like your plants to tick all the boxes - and with small gardens who doesn't - check out Verbascum phoeniceum Violetta. For a start, she's more compact than most, reaching just 90cm tall. The leaves form a dark-green rosette infused with purple and with distinct purple veining. For plants that will look great alongside Violetta, why not have a look at our full range of beautiful herbaceous perennials?

Also known as the purple mullein, rising from the leaves are tissue-thin deep purple blooms. Each flower has an even darker centre with golden stamens. As if that wasn't enough, they are followed by pearl-like seed pods, ripening to purple-black, extending the season of interest even longer.

Great In Your Garden...

As a more compact verbascum than most, Violetta is ideal for smaller gardens and may even be grown in large containers. Its deep purples and greens are the perfect foil to the spring colours of cream, yellow and lime green.

To support the flowers, stake in early spring with twiggy branches which will be unobtrusive. Plant them either in full sun or light shade among late-flowering bulbs or early summer-flowering varieties like foxgloves.

To encourage repeat flowering, cut off the central flower spike when spent to where side shoots are emerging to encourage more flowers to form.
