Veronica gentianoides

In the coolest of blues Veronica gentianoides, or Gentian Speedwell, will be an asset in almost every garden but if this Veronica doesn't float your boat, have a look at our extensive range of high-performing perennials.

The prolific flower spikes almost the colour of stonewashed denim reach just 45cm from May to July above a handsome mat of glossy dark green leaves, making excellent ground cover.

If its own attributes weren't enough, Veronica gentianoides has that rare ability of some herbaceous perennials to bring out the best in other plants and bridge the gap between late spring and early summer bloomers, meaning your borders don't flag.

Great In Your Garden...

It is an absolute bee magnet and a terrific choice for wildlife and cottage gardens - it's not too structured or stuffy, with an olde-worlde charm.

In the border or in containers, Veronica gentianoides contrasts beautifully with other flowers on either side of the colour spectrum. Try its pale blue next to golden-yellows or oranges, such as Crocosmia Emily McKenzie or Geums. It also mixes well with other pastel shades for a softer, dreamy effect - Alchemilla mollis, foxgloves, honesty and sweet rocket, which all loved by pollinators, too.

Its compact habit makes it terrific as groundcover and edging towards the front of a border, in the rock garden or even in tubs and pots. The Gentian Speedwell will flower happily in full sun and partial shade but it does need loamy, moist but well-drained soil.
