Description

Clematis 'Ville de Lyon'

This sumptuous pink-red clematis has distinctive rounded flowers with slightly overlapping sepals, creating a wonderful contrast with most other clematis varieties. The blooms are not the biggest, starting off around 10-15cm wide and shrinking as the season goes on, but they are profuse and look superb jumbled up with the fresh green foliage.

Growing Ville de Lyon Clematis

Partial shade is ideal because you should get richer coloured flowers.

Pruning Group 3: Cut the stems back to the lowest pair of buds in February or March.

Did you know?

Bred by Francisque Morel in 1899 from C. texensis and an old, no longer available viticella, ‘Viviand Morel’.

The International Clematis Society chose Ville de Lyon for its Clematis of the Month for January 2004.

Planting and Care Instructions

Clematis Ville de Lyon - growing instructions:

  • Give it a deep, moist spot to bury its roots into.
  • The soil needs to be well drained (it won't tolerate water logging).
  • Needs a supporting structure to climb - as all growth is pruned back each year, the plant will never overwhelm trees or shrubs that it climbs through.
  • Final height of 3m makes it well suited to scrambling through small to medium trees and shrubs.
  • Pruning group 3 - cut down all stems each year in early spring (before new growth begins) to a set of buds 15-20cm above ground level.
  • All clematis like a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost in late spring.
