The petals are white with delicate mauve veining on the reverse. It prefers a sheltered, sunny site and will reach up to 2.5 metres in height.

Growing White Prince Charles

It thrives in alkaline to neutral, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, and like all clematis, prefers its roots to be kept cool. Water well after planting and keep soil moist during dry weather in the first few growing seasons. Plants in containers will need regular watering. Provide wires or trellis as support or grow through trees or shrubs. Group 3 Clematis like White Prince Charles should be cut back in late winter or early spring.

Planting Companions for White Prince Charles

This self-clinging variety will happily climb up through shrubs and small trees. It is also ideal to plant at the base of fences, walls and arbours which it will cover with large white flowers from June to September. Suitable for large containers, this adaptable climber is a wonderful choice for gardens of all sizes.

With its pure white flowers, this clematis looks great against dark backdrops and also blends in beautifully with pale colour schemes alongside white and soft pink roses, and pastel-coloured perennials such as Geranium Ingwersen's Variety, Anemone Queen Charlotte and Lupin Gladiator. It also combines well with other clematis and the pale flowers of Honeysuckle Graham Thomas.

Raised in 2007 by renowned Japanese clematis breeder and nurseryman, Kozo Sugimoto, it is a white form of the late, large-flowered Prince Charles, a popular viticella clematis with violet-blue blooms. .

In our opinion, this variety has an "honorary" Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, because, apart from the colour, it is the same as the aforementioned Prince Charles variety, which holds the award.

Clematis viticella is a robust type which tolerates drier soils than most clematis and is equally at home in pots or in the ground. It originates from Southern Europe and was introduced to the UK in 1569.

Keep soil moist during dry weather in the first few growing seasons. Plants in containers will need more regular watering. Provide wires or trellis as support for the clematis or grow through trees or shrubs. Group 3 Clematis should be cut back in late winter or early spring. Feed plants in pots monthly with a liquid fertiliser during the growing season. For clematis in the ground, feed in early spring and mulch well afterwards.
