    Hawthorn Varieties - Crataegus Species

Hawthorn is an extremely hardy native tree and it is Britain's most widely used thorny country hedge plant. Common Hawthorn plants, Crataegus monogyna, are used for hedging; you can buy the largest sizes of these in discounted bundles of 50 plants. Common hawthorn is the main component of a mixed native hedge.
If you want a hawthorn tree, we grow 4 ornamental varieties of Midland Hawthorn, Crataegus laevigata. Crimson Cloud & Paul's Scarlet have red flowers, Rosea Flore Pleno has pink flowers and there is a plain White Hawthorn called Plena.
Hawthorn grows to 8 metres tall.

Hawthorn is the toughest hedge plant there is; it will grow pretty much anywhere from poor, dry, sandy soil near the coast, to wet, heavy clay that is prone to waterlogging. It is the standard plant for a farmer's country hedge: most British country hedgerows are 50-100% hawthorn.
Hawthorn trees have a bristly, rugged beauty and draw lots of wildlife into your garden, including nesting songbirds. Their dense, twiggy canopies aren't the most elegant in the world, but they make great screening, cast good shade and they are great for planting in front of taller trees as part of a windbreak belt.
