Evergreen Shrub Honeysuckle

Also known as boxleaf honeysuckle, this tough little plant makes a great alternative to boxwood and, unlike box, it has pretty, fragrant flowers. It is a great hedge plant for medium sized, formal barriers up to about 1.8 metres tall. The small, dense evergreen leaves clip perfectly. Shrub honeysuckle is ideal for topiary because it grows quickly.
If your site is very shady, we recommend box hedging instead.

Growing Shrub Honeysuckle Hedges
Your plants aren't demanding; any soil with decent drainage is fine, including chalk and partial shade is fine. In the wild, these bushes often grow next to streams, so damp places are fine. They are fully frost hardy, but they don't like exposed, really windy sites and won't grow near the coast. Mature plants are very drought resistant. Lonicera nitida is suitable for inner city planting.

This is a Chinese species, brought to Britain by Ernest Wilson.
