Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote
We grow the two most suitable English Lavender Plants for the British climate, Munstead and Hidcote.
Lavender loves dry, windy places in the sun and hates damp soil and shade.
Lavender plants give you great flowers, attractive
evergreen foliage and a scented garden.
These are blue to purple english lavender
plants, Lavandula angustifolia, which is the hardiest variety, suitable for planting outside in the UK. It is ideal for low, fragrant, decorative hedging.
Lavender plants make
an excellent edge to a rose border or herb or vegetable garden.
They soften landscaping like terraces or
paths.
Lavender hedges or rows can bring colour, structure
and scent to your garden. It is beautiful from spring to autumn and tidies up nicely for the winter. Although if you are a bird lover, leave it unpruned in autumn, you will bring lots of goldfinches to your garden - they love lavender seed heads
Protecting your lavender in winter:
Lavender is a Mediterranean plant and although it is quite hardy, it pays to keep the snow off it in winter. When there is a snow forecast, you can cover your lavender with horticultural fleece if you want - use sticks or bamboo to peg the fleece in place until the cold has passed. However if the ground is well drained lavender will survive in very cold temperatures indeed. The lavender in the landscape photograph on our home page was taken by our friend Tony Howell and came through the winter of 2010-11 in temperatures as low as -16C. Enjoy it as we think he is the best professional landscape photographer taking pictures in the UK today.
