Hornbeam Hedging & Trees

Hornbeam Varieties - Carpinus Species

Hornbeam is a medium sized deciduous tree. When it is clipped as a formal garden hedge, it looks similar to beech; Hornbeam is suitable for damp soil and shady sites where beech won't grow. It loves heavy clay, tolerates chalk and it is not recommended for poorly fertile soils.
A Hornbeam tree will grow to 20 metres tall.
Common Hornbeam plants, Carpinus betulus, are used for hedging. The largest sizes of these Hornbeam saplings are also for sale in discounted bundles of 50 plants.
You can also buy large Hornbeam trees and the narrow ornamental variety, Fastigiate Hornbeam.

The planting and delivery season for bareroot Hornbeam trees & hedging plants is November - March.

Hornbeam makes good firewood and coppices of hornbeam have been used as sources of renewable firewood for centuries. Strictly speaking, Hornbeam isn't a truly native tree outside of the South of England, but it has been planted by humans and naturalised across the rest of Britain for so long that it makes no difference.
