Cornus Mas - Cornelian Cherry Cornus mas, the small tree dogwood known as Cornelian Cherry is ideal in a hedge but also makes a good specimen. Cornus mas gives a great display from February onwards, when masses (no pun intended) of small yellow flowers appear. Bright red, edible cherry-like fruits follow the flowers, giving Cornus mas the name Cornelian Cherry , and the leaves turn a lovely reddish-purple in the autumn to finish off the show. This is a real all-rounder,
Cornus mas is tolerant of most soil types, although like all dogwoods, it prefers it damp. For the avoidance of doubt this is not one of the dogwoods you hack down to ground level every spring.
Cornus mas grows to 15m but can be kept in a hedge of 1.5 metres and upwards.
