Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire (Dogwood)  is a medium sized, deciduous shrub with dense, upright growth and amazing red, yellow and orange winter bark. This bark colouring fades as summer comes in, but you can ensure the flame colouring is back at its best in the winter months by cutting Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire back very hard in March.

The foliage is a rather boring green but the leaves also turn an excellent orange-yellow in the autumn, making this a very attractive plant.  It can be used in informal hedges, but we think Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire dogwood is at its best in a massed planting with other less flamboyant dogwoods to set it off.

Some of the other dogwoods are enormously vigorous and can put on up to 2 metres in growth in a season. Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire is a gentler soul and takes a little moment to get going - so plant it at the front of your dogwood displat as it may only grow 60-70cms in a year.

Like all dogwoods Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire loves damp ground although we have one that (now it is established) is growing quite happily on a dry bank.
