Pyrus communis Winter Nellis
A nice little multi-purpose number, Winter Nellis is a freckly pear with russet splodges over its green skin - not the world's prettiest pear, but they more than make up for it with usefulness. The fruit are a bit small and the flesh is firm, with that grainy texture towards the centre that a lot of harder pears have. They store wonderfully well - until March in good conditions - and are excellent for cooking and stewing, the equal of any other pear we stock. They are fine to eat fresh and if you prefer a firmer pear, we would recommend Winter Nellis. They are quite an old variety and were exported from Belgium to the USA in the 1820's. Pick your fruit in late October and let them ripen off the tree in a cool dry place.

Rootstocks, Growing Notes and Pruning & Planting Advice:
Your trees are hardy and the flowers have some resistance to late spring frosts - a sensible choice for the North. We grow them on Quince A rootstocks, which give you the choice of training your trees on wires or growing a mature tree, about 4 metres in height.
