When people want to buy a mature tree, they are usually thinking of the largest tree sizes that we deliver, known as Standard Trees.
Once a tree is over about 250cm tall, it’s big enough to grade as a Standard, measured by its girth in centimetres at 1m above ground level.
Here at Ashridge we specialize in delivering the smaller two sizes of Standard Tree:
Light Standard: 6/8cm girth
Medium / Regular Standard: 8/10cm girth
That look like this, modelled in a bundle of five on Rodney’s shoulder:
These are the biggest trees we deliver, carried by the first Rodney we hired.
And look like this immediately after planting:
The mature trees sizes that we deliver are easy to plant and stake, and establish reliably.
Bigger trees than what we sell are harder to carry and plant, require more staking, and attentive care to prevent them getting stressed.
As a general rule, the bigger a tree is when you transplant it, the more it gets stressed and risks failure. To reduce that transplant stress, bigger trees are often transplanted with a heavy rootball or large pot.
We do not sell big trees with rootballs, only large Yew hedge plants. We specialise in bareroot trees, delivered in Winter. Our range of potted trees are all the same sizes as the bareroot range, just available year round.
I Want the Biggest Trees it’s Possible to Deliver
To buy the biggest mature trees, delivered with a heavy rootball or large pot, we direct you to these reputable companies, that we have no business relationship with, or responsibility for:
If you have never collected a mature tree from a garden centre or nursery near you before, it’s quite a job to transport it safely home without scraping the bark or smushing the branches.
The value of delivery is that it saves you time, and if the tree does get damaged by our courier, we can fix that for you.
When collecting a mature tree yourself, remember to put the rootball in first, pointing in the direction of travel. If you have to slam on the brakes, the rootball can’t shift forward and crush the branches.
Here at Ashridge, based in Castle Cary, Somerset, our collection day is Friday, for orders already placed & paid for online at least a day earlier, 2-3 days if it’s a large order.
