The Best Lavender Varieties for British Gardens

These are the top five lavender plants for reliable success growing outdoors in open soil in the UK, rather than in a pot. 
They are all good for making Lavender hedging.

  1. Hidcote - the classic blue-purple English Lavender. If in doubt, this is the one.
  2. Havana - a modern English Lavender that some prefer to Hidcote: they are pretty similar!
  3. Grosso - the backbone of oil production, this Dutch Lavender's tall flower stems look great behind English Lavenders
  4. Phenomenal - more compact than Grosso with deeper purple flowers that sizzle over the leaves, it's the modern variety with the biggest increase in demand in 2025
  5. Munstead - in our opinion, Munstead is a less vibrant support variety that backs up the others, it's not really the star of the show, unless you prefer its softer pastel colour
