Alder Buckthorn - Bareroot Shrubs

Alder Buckthorn, Rhamnus frangula is a large native shrub or small tree that is great for country hedging. It produces red berries in the spring that mature and darken to almost black in autumn, which contrasts well with its lovely yellow autumn foliage. Thrushes love them. It is an excellent host for bees and butterflies, although the tiny flowers aren't really visible amongst the leaves.

Growing Alder Buckthorn
This plant likes wet sites and does well on poorly fertile soil as long as it is moist. We don't recommend it for dry places unless the soil is very rich and fertile. It won't grow on chalk or the coast. It will tolerate a bit of shade.
Buckthorn Hedge Spacing: 3 per metre.

Recently, botanists have determined that Rhamnus frangulareally belongs in its own genus and it is now officially called Frangula alnus. The charcoal made from buckthorn wood is one of the best for making gunpowder.
