Home > Advice > Fruit Tree Guides > Apple Tree Pollination
Cross pollination happens when two apple trees of different varieties are in flower at the same time.
Most apple trees will not make any fruit if they are not pollinated.
A tree will cross pollinate with trees in the same group and the groups immediately before and after it.
For Example, a tree in Group C will Cross Pollinate with all trees in groups B, C and D.

Crabapple trees are the best pollinators. They have long flowering periods and make loads of pollen.
They are all good, but Malus John Downie or the bright yellow Malus
Golden Hornet are the best: one will do a whole orchard.
Don't worry, Apple Tree Pollination is Easy:
The fact is that apple and crabapple trees are very common all over the UK.
So even in the city, but especially in the suburbs and countryside, there is a high chance that you have a suitable pollination partner in your area already.
If you are buying several apple trees that cover a range of Pollination Groups, you really don't need to worry about it at all.
Self-Fertile Apple Trees:
The fact is that if you want the best crops, your trees need to be pollinated.
Triploid Apple Trees:
Triploid trees can only receive pollen, they cannot pollinate other trees.
This means that if you buy a triploid tree, you will need two other trees so they they can pollinate each other as well as the triploid tree.
Bees make Pollination happen:
Even though thousands of insects get involved in pollination, it's the bees that do more than 90% of the work.
No bees means poor pollination.
Everything you can do to attract & support your local bees is good for your apple trees.
Most commercial farmers have their own hives, or rent them from beekeepers for the flowering season.
