Large Black Walnut Trees in Standard Sizes - Juglans nigra

The Black walnut is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree with distinctive ridged bark and butter yellow autumn leaves. It is a superb timber tree.
These are the largest black walnut trees that we sell, you can buy smaller Black Walnut saplings here.

Juglans nigra produces an abundance of nuts in the autumn, you will probably know that they are ready when you see lots of squirrels in your tree. The nuts are notoriously messy to remove from their husks, but the quality of the kernel inside is generally considered to be even better than the common walnut, which is the one you will normally see in the shops.

Growing Black Walnut Trees
The Black walnut grows best in deep, well-drained soil and it likes plenty of sun. It is a bit hardier than the Common walnut, but we still don't recommend it for frosty places or the North if you plan to harvest nuts from it.
Black walnut trees are infamous for killing many other plants that grow near them, so we've made a list of suitable companion plants that can thrive next to one.
It will grow to about 30 m

Black Walnuts are an American tree that was brought to Britain in the mid-1600's by John Tradescant. They now grow wild in many parts of Southern England and Wales.

How Standard Trees are Measured:
All the plants in the ornamental trees section are graded as standards, which means that they are measured by their girth in centimetres 1 metre above ground level (basically, their trunk's waist measurement). They aren't measured by their height, which will vary.

So, a 6/8 standard has a trunk with a circumference of 6-8 centimetres and an 8/10 standard has a trunk 8-10 centimetres around.

This measurement makes no difference to the tree's final height. Most standards are between 2 - 3.5 metres tall, but this is just an average. We cannot tell you how tall your trees will be before we deliver them.
