Crab Apple - Malus sylvestris
The Crab Apple is a small, deciduous, native tree that produces plentiful clusters of white-pink blossom.
The crabapples themselves are yellow & green, small, hard, bitter, acidic fruit that can't be eaten raw - most animals leave them alone - but are great for jams, jellies, apple sauces and cider making.
This is the wild crab tree, sold in small sizes as a sapling. It is a great hedge plant.
You can see our range of ornamental crab apple trees sold in bigger sizes here - these have even more blossom and colourful fruit & leaves too.
Can reach about 10m.
Pollinating Apple Trees with Crabapples: Crab apple trees are the best orchard pollinators: use them if you don't have time to choose pollination partners for your apple trees.
- If you plant one of the young trees from this page at the same time as your apple trees, it will grow up quickly and pollinate them.
- If you are in a hurry to get pollinating, buy a larger sized crab tree.
