About Lupins

Order Lupin Plants Now

Also known as the Lupinusn, these striking cottage garden perennials produce upright, spire-shaped flower heads in a dazzling range of colours through late spring and early summer. Their healthy, palm-shaped leaves are bold and attractive, perfect for adding height and drama to a mixed border or wildflower planting.

Lupins like full sun to partial shade and a well-drained, slightly acidic soil — they dislike heavy clay and waterlogged conditions. However, if they dry out during their growing season their ability to flower well will be reduced, so a little water during dry spells makes all the difference to an established plant. They are perfectly at home in cottage gardens and also do well in large pots — as with any potted plant, you must pay more attention to watering.

Deadhead spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a second flush of blooms later in the season. Cutting back to the base of the spike as soon as the flowers fade will reward you with further colour before summer is out.

Note that, in exposed positions, the tall flower spikes may need staking to prevent them leaning or falling in strong winds — a simple cane or grow-through support works well.

Allow a full season for newly planted lupins to establish and reach their flowering potential: worth the patience!

Their popularity is demonstrated by the enormous range of Lupin cultivars, many of which hold an RHS Award of Garden Merit — in our opinion, they all deserve one for their bold, joyful colour and reliable performance in the British garden.

Lupins are in the Fabaceae (legume) family, and as nitrogen-fixers they actually improve the soil they grow in. They originate from the Americas and the Mediterranean, and have been a staple of British cottage gardens for centuries.
