Description

Tulip Daytona

One of the best late-flowering tulips, Daytona stands out from the crowd with its pure white petals, and the deeply fringed edges of the petals are ruffled like newly-fallen snow. Their movement in the breeze creates a great feeling of texture in any planting scheme. Mix them with highly coloured tulips from our full range.

As it is a very long-flowering variety, Daytona is a favourite of flower arrangers, who prize its purity of colour and the gentle fringing of its petals.

Goes well with...

It's quite a tall tulip at 50cm, so you can underplant late-flowering summer perennials with it, and their foliage won't impede Daytona's growth; the white flowers will be clear of the leaves when they bloom in May, and the perennials provide a backdrop and shelter or support system as they grow. When the tulips have finished flowering, their leaves can be allowed to die back naturally, covered by herbaceous perennials like Echinacea and Rudbeckia.

It can adapt itself to any garden design you prefer. Use it dotted about with similar late-flowering tulips for a cottage garden feel, or perhaps on large containers with one or two other colours. Use it on its own in a restrained modern courtyard, where green and architectural leaf shapes are the dominant features against black or grey landscaping.

Did You Know...

Flowers were marketed like gift cards before gift cards: one for every occasion. White tulips mean 'I'm sorry', or 'my condolences'.

Daytona is in Florida, and this Dutch variety was introduced in 1999.

Cultivation Instructions

Daytona Tulips. Plant bulbs from September to December, pointy end up, roots facing down, 15-20cm deep and 10-15cm apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Add some grit if your garden has a heavy clay soil. Tulips need a lot of food to support their flowers, so dig in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost before planting. If bulbs are being planted in pots, space the bulbs 1-2cm apart in one layer, or 2-3cm apart if layering them on top of each other. If the tulip fire virus is a problem in your region, delay planting until November or December.
