Growing Deltas Sarah Fuchsias

These hardy, dappled shade-tolerant shrubs are at their best in sunny, not too blisteringly hot sheltered sites. They prefer fertile, well drained soil.

If the winter is too harsh for them, their stems will die above ground like a herbaceous perennial, and you can chop them off before spring to make way for the regrowth.

They are ideal for growing in pots in most of the country. In colder parts of the North, it can be a problem if the pot freezes too much, potentially killing the crown; plants in the ground should be well enough insulated to avoid this. When planting in containers, plant them deeper than normal to give them extra protection.

In Your Garden Design

Plant with a fuchsia-coloured rose such as a Timeless Purple. It would also add colour and interest to any border, working well if planted with two annuals - Cerinthe major ‘Purpurascens’ and Orlaya grandiflora. Other good companion plants are Monarda Barmy Lilac, Melissa Lilac Lavender, and Geranium Azure Rush.
