Growing 'Genii' Fuchsias

These hardy, quite shade-tolerant shrubs do their best best in sunny, sheltered sites away from drying winds They suit any fertile, well-drained soil. If the winter is too much for them, their stems will die above ground like a herbaceous perennial, and you can chop them off before spring to make way for the regrowth. Give them a good winter mulch to help protect them.

They are ideal for growing in pots in most of the country. In colder areas, it can be a problem if the pot is frozen for too long, potentially killing the crown; plants in the ground should be well enough insulated to avoid this.

In Your Garden Design

Grow this at the front of the border, where it will flower for months. Of upright habit, it will also look good in pots, alongside other small shrubs, annuals and perennials. It is hugely versatile and can be trained into a standard and is ideal for small gardens. Good companion plants are Ajuga reptans 'Bronze Beauty', otherwise known as carpet bugle which will create a lovely bed around it (watch out as it can spread). On a similar note, try with Liriope Muscari, Salvia 'Amethyst' or Salvia genii Amethyst lips and geranium 'Orion' or geranium Wargrave Pink.
