Woodland Bulb Mix – Spring Colour Under Trees and Hedges

This collection is our selection of native and shade-tolerant bulb varieties chosen because they grow well in the dappled light beneath deciduous trees and hedgerows. These are not sun-worshippers — they thrive in exactly the conditions that make most bedding plants sulk.

In spring, the canopy is still bare and the woodland floor gets the light it needs. The bulbs flower, set seed, and recharge underground before the leaves close over and shade them out. It is a cycle that has worked in British woodlands for thousands of years, and it works just as well under a garden hedge or a row of fruit trees.

Plant in decent soil — these are not desert plants, they want humus and moisture — and leave them alone. They will increase by division and self-seeding, and within a few years the display will be significantly more impressive than the first spring. Do not mow or tidy the area until mid-June at the earliest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these grow in full shade?

Dappled shade under deciduous trees is ideal — the bulbs get winter and early spring light when the canopy is bare. Deep, permanent shade under evergreens is harder, though snowdrops and wood anemones can manage. Avoid dry shade under eaves.

Do I need to feed woodland bulbs?

A light scattering of leaf mould or garden compost in autumn mimics the natural forest-floor cycle. They do not need synthetic fertiliser. The most important thing is leaving the foliage to die back naturally.

Can I plant these under a hedge?

One of the best positions. The base of a deciduous hedge (beech, hornbeam, hawthorn) provides exactly the conditions woodland bulbs need — winter light, spring moisture, summer shade.
