Narcissus 'Fortune'

Narcissus 'Fortune' is an award-winning daffodil that produces long-lasting, large-cupped flowers with a well-developed rich buttery yellow perianth (petals) and trumpets that tend to orange at their edges. Depending on position, soil and growing conditions, this can become a distinct red flush. It is a joy to see them poking their heads though the snow after a long winter.

Fortune daffodils are ideal for planting in orchards, under trees or in borders where they can be left alone for years to naturalise, we use them in our Naturalising Mix Collection, and they bring a touch of sunshine to your garden just before spring has really sprung. You can also plant them in grassland and orchards just as long as it is not cut for about 6-8 weeks after flowering. Plant a few along a roadside verge or under a hedge and let them spread over the years. If you are buying more from our selection of daffodil and narcissi bulbs then this is a good use for any left over from your planting plans elsewhere in the garden.

Narcissus Fortune is also suitable as a pot grown daffodil when you can either let it flower naturally outdoors on a patio or terrace, or force it indoors when it can be made to flower in time for Christmas.

  • Group 2: Large-cupped Daffodil

Fortune daffodil bulbs should be planted outdoors in early autumn, at about twice their own depth. Like all spring flowering bulbs they do best in well-drained soil that contains some organic matter. What is most important is that the ground is moist during their growing season which is from September through to the beginning of April. They are completely hardy and will grow happily in sun or light shade. As far as soil type is concerned, Fortune is tolerates most types of soil including heavy clay, chalk and sandy soils as well as good garden loam.

This classic variety was bred in 1915, or perhaps earlier, by W.T. Ware, probably as a cross between `Sir Watkin' and `Blackwell'. It has won a Forcing Award (1934), a First Class Certificate (1924 & 1927) and a Preliminary Commendation (1923).
