Verbena bonariensis and its compact counterpart, ‘Lollipop’, are easy to grow, long-lasting, great for pollinators, with purple flowers on slender, wiry stems that inter-plant well with so many other perennials.

Verbena bonariensis is undemanding and will grow in any sunny location, but in the coldest inland regions of Scotland it might not survive Winter, making it an annual rather than a short-lived perennial in those locations.

Verbena is a prolific self-seeder when it's happy: the seedlings are easy to hoe out, but don't transplant well.

When is the best time to plant Vervain?

  1. The perfect time is around early or mid-Autumn, September-October, while the soil is still warm. This gives plants time to establish roots before it gets too cold, ready for a strong start in Spring.
  2. The next best time is in Spring when the frosts have passed and the soil is warming up: around mid-April in the South, closer to June in the North and Scotland.
  3. After that, vervain can be planted during summer as long as you water correctly: they hate drying out while putting down new root, but do not overwater either.
  4. It's best to avoid planting out vervain in winter. Over winter them in pots in a sheltered place, then plant out in Spring when the soil is warming up.
