Growing Pink Lollipop Hydrangeas

The Flair & Flavours range are tough, small shrubs that do well in containers and borders. As Reblooming Hydrangeas, they flower on new and old wood. These hardy Hydrangeas prefer cool and moist conditions, so a bit of shade and shelter are preferable to an open sunny situation that tends to get dry in summer: too much sun and wind tends to damage the foliage.

They prefer rich, well-drained soil that has been improved with plenty of compost to hold the moisture and nutrients that hydrangeas love. Prune out older wood on mature plants in Autumn or late Winter to make way for new growth.

The soil pH can affect the availability of aluminium in the soil, which can in turn impact upon the colour of the flowers. Acidic soil, which is high in available aluminium, turns flowers blue, and lime or alkaline conditions turn them pink (by making the aluminium unavailable).

In Your Garden Design

Hydrangeas were once regarded as old-fashioned, perhaps because they were also associated with cottage gardens, but these days gardener designers love them - there are so many to choose from, and they all have a long flowering period. You can let them overhang gravel pathways, mixed in with grasses, or add a pop of colour, particularly with this Lollipop Pink variety, by putting in a pot as a feature point of a patio against a low cut box hedge. In full bloom you can place a pair by a front door and then, when slightly over, move to your back garden to let other plants shine. This one is a particularly perfect choice for a container. It would look equally good in a border next to the striking architectural foliage of Melianthus major or paired with hostas, hellebores and azalias and rhododendrons.
