Cardinal de Richelieu shrub roses are gallica roses, old roses that add a touch of class to any border. The blooms are some of the darkest of all roses; the colour begins as a mauve pink bud, before blooming and turning a deep rich purple. The flowers themselves are beautifully formed and sit dotted around amongst deep glossy green, bushy foliage.

Great for your garden

Cardinal de Richelieu rose bushes like to be planted in full sun, in well drained, moist soil. Because of its compact nature it works very well in courtyard and city gardens, but is equally happy in a country garden border. The stems have few thorns and the flowers are distributed in small clusters during the summer when it is in bloom. The plant can generally grow to around 4 ft.

Look out for

Cardinal de Richelieu may be affected by black spot (like most roses), and by mildew in bad summers. As with all roses, rabbit and deer can cause damage and aphids can be a nuisance.

Trivia

The gallica rose, Cardinal de Richelieu, was launched in 1847 and takes its name from Cardinal de Richelieu, who was a French clergyman, noble and statesman responsible for the creation of the Jardin Royal des Plants Medicinales in in Paris. He was also the principal villain in the Three Musketeers
